Vajrakilaya (Tib. Dorje Phurba) is a deity who embodies the enlightened activities of all the buddhas, whose practice is one of the most powerful for purification of the spiritual path.

Vajrakilaya Gutor, performed on the second last day before Losar, is a ritual for removing obstacles and negative forces of the current year for a successful and auspicious New Year.

During the puja, there are powerful prayers to remove negativities of the body, speech and mind. The merit of the practice is dedicated to the benefit of all living beings.

Guthuk

On Gutor, according to the tradition, Tibetan families eat a special type of soup with dumplings, called “Guthuk”. The dumplings contain beans, broken pieces of wood, chilles, wool, charcoal or pieces of paper on which various words are written. People eat them, and then tell their New Year’s fortune in turn by checking what the ingredients are of the one they chose.
